Inter Milan – the rise of the fallen giant

3 min read

Inter Milan are threatening to bring Juventus’ domination in Serie A to an end this season. They are the only team, along with Liverpool with perfect records in the top 5 European leagues since the start of the campaign. After years of struggle, the Nerazzurri look like a real contender for the Scudetto.

Inter showed their big ambitions when they named Antonio Conte as their new manager last May. Thus, they secured a proven winner who already had great success in the Italian league. The Italian won 3 consecutive titles with Juventus to start a new era in the Calcio. His reputation was cemented even more when Conte triumphed in the English Premier League in his debut season.

The Inter’s board had a hard task to secure his services. Conte is a legend as both footballer and manager of their fiercest rivals. Furthermore, he is famous for his demands to be seriously backed in the transfer market.

Transfer Window

Apparently, Conte finally got what he wants. Romelu Lukaku was his main target when was at Chelsea but Manchester United stole him at the last moment. Inter signed the Belgian striker this summer in a £73m deal. On the contrary, the Nerazzurri paid nothing for the experienced Diego Godin who joined them in a free transfer. He may be an invaluable asset to their defence with his experience at the highest level.

Another high-profile player who joined them on loan is Alexis Sanchez The Chilean will try to rediscover his best form back in Serie A where his football journey began. Despite signing some big names, Internazionale also worked on the transfers of some promising young players from Serie A. Nicolo Barella, Stefano Sensi and Matteo Politano were some nice additions to the squad. They can make an immediate impact and are great prospects for the future.

Antonio Conte also had a clear vision about the players who were deemed surplus to requirements. Mauro Icardi was Inter’s top scored over the last few seasons but he was shipped out on loan to PSG. Ivan Perisic is another leading figure who left the club on a temporary basis. Radja Nainggolan and Joao Mario were big-money signings who failed to integrate into the first team and were allowed to leave.

Team Formation

Inter’s new manager kept trusting his favorite 3-5-2 formation. The defensive trio of Godin, De Vrij and Skriniar, along with Handanovic provides a solid foundation at the back. Asamoah, Biraghi, D’Ambrosio, and Candreva are all options for the full-back positions. Inter have the best defensive record in the league conceding only 2 goals this season. The Nerazzurri kept a clean sheet in 100% of their home games.

Their midfield was also very impressive this campaign. Sensi is their leading goalscorer netting 3 goals. He also provided 2 assists. Sensi is currently in Serie A Best XI of WhoScored having the 3rd highest rating. Brozovic contributed with 2 goals from the middle of the park while Barella supplied his teammates with 2 assists.

Romelu Lukaku has already started to prove his worth as a goalscorer scoring 3 goals. Alexis Sanchez also opened his goals scoring account last week. The Chilean had a mixed night being sent off early in the second half. Lautaro Martinez helped Argentina to a 3rd place finish at Copa America this summer and is another exciting option for the attacking positions.

Antonio Conte managed to triumph in the Premier League in his debut season. His start at the helm of Inter looks promising but his new team still has to prove that they can battle for the Scudetto.
