Real Madrid – a summer of changes

Real Madrid - a summer of changes 1

We are heading to a summer break for the most completions. Therefore, we will not restrict ourselves to provide only BTTS predictions and will look into the transfer activities of some of the biggest names of the European football. Our first analysis will be  for the most successful team in the Champions League – Real Madrid.

The lifted the trophy in 3 consecutive years – a record which may not be accomplished again. However, their dominance came to an end and Los Blancos had a disastrous season, which they want to forget as soon as possible.

Florentino Perez’s experiment with Julen Lopetegui was unsuccessful to say the least while Santiago Solari failed to step into Zidane’s shoes as an interim manager. Although the Frenchman was persuaded to get back at the helm. Zidane is facing few challenges in order to bring back the glory days at Santiago Bernabeu.

Overview of the current squad.

Real Madrid have many serial winners in their squad. Some of these players are considered the best at their positions in Europe. Among them is Luca Modric who is the current holder of the Golden Ball award. However, many Real Madrid stars are considerably past their primes. Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Modric and  Gareth Bale may be pointed out as such examples. The average age of the team is 26.4.

Another major concern is that Real Madrid didn’t manage to replace Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese was a pivotal figure and played a great role in their success during  his 9 years stay at the Santiago Bernabeu. Ronaldo was the man for the big occasions and the Spanish giants relied heavily on him to deliver when it matters the most. Benzema tried to take more responsibility in his absence while Vinicius Jr had shining moments in his breakthrough season. Their contributions are not enough for a team with an ambition to dominate on a permanent basis.

The transfer of Thibaut Courtois did not upgrade the goalkeeping position. The Belgian was far from convincing  and made several unforced errors. Keylor Navas lost his place in the team despite being a reliable part of the side for years.

Isco was a key member in Zidane’s formation, but was benched by Solari due to their conflict. Marcelo is another player who under-performed badly. Sergio Reguilon was preferred at the left back, which speaks for the Brazilian’s form. Marco Asensio emerged as one of the most promising youngsters after scoring screamers for fun in his debut year in the first team. His second year was less impressive and he didn’t progress to a starter in Real Madrid’s side.

Gareth Bale’s performances were the biggest disappointment this season. The expectations were that the Welshman can be the new leader in Real Madrid’s attack. The reality is that he is not trusted and Zidane is looking to offload him.

Departing players

As we have already mentioned, Gareth Bale is leading the list of unwanted players. His department may be problematic due to his desire to stay despite being fringed by Zidane. Bale’s injury history and high wages are pushing back many of the clubs which are interested in signing him. The most likely escape route for the Welshman is leaving on loan. Real Madrid used a similar approach when they sent James Rodriguez to Bayern Munich on a temporary basis.

He has played for the German champions for 2 years, but does not intend to sign a permanent contract with them. The Columbian probably doesn’t have a future at Santiago Bernabeu either. There are speculations surrounding the careers of Sergio Ramos and Marcelo in Madrid, but they are most likely to stay.

Arriving players

After a few relatively quiet transfer summers, Real Madrid are ready to splash the cash again. They have already confirmed the arrival of Luka Jovic. The Serb scored 17 goals and assisted 5 more goals. Furthermore, he netted 10 more goals in UEFA Europa league – the second best record in the competition. Jovic is still only 21 years old and is yet to fulfill his full potential, but can make an instant impact on Real’s side. Benzema can’t be considered an automatic starter despite his decent efforts.

Eden Hazard completes his dream move to Real Madrid and many madridistas  are excited by seeing him the famous white jersey. He is labeled as one of the best players in the Premier League. Moreover, the Belgian star has the highest WhoScored rating in the division. Hazard is leading in assists (15), chances created in open play (80), dribbles completed (138) and touches (2678). He was involved in 49% of the goals which Chelsea scored in the league. Hazard’s trickery, vision and composure in front of the goal are among the assets which may help him to shine in La Liga next season.

Los Blancos are targeting another Premier League player according to the gossip. Christian Eriksen confirmed that he is looking for a new challenge and he may be the long term replacement for Modric. He will be a free agent next summer, but Real Madrid may prefer to act now.

Paul Pogba is linked with a summer move to the Spanish capital and Zinedine Zidane is a famous admirer of his skills. Despite that a potential transfer  is expected to be complicated by the hefty price tag.

Another name which deserved to be mentioned is Ferland Mendy. The Frenchman can strengthen the Real’s defense. However, Lyon denied the reports that the move is all but completed.

The expectations are that Florentino Perez will stay active in the market in order to complete the required squad overhaul. The fans will stay tuned as more interesting news will be coming.
